Describing Metal

Metal is a vague identifier that describes a subset of this multidimensional space, the boundaries of which are far from definite, and certainly not objective…. Sub-genres are sure to extend beyond this commonly held space, and not all sub-genres will occupy its entirety, necessarily (since some begin on the fringes and then continue into the distance).

Inner Peace Through METAL (an early draft)

(as posted to mefi and the ultimate-metal.com forums ) Image and Posturing : As fan of Metal, I’d like to think that it can be (re)defined in terms that isolate it from the [at-worst bigoted , at best hetero-male-centric ] behaviors and ideas currently associated with it…. To give some impression of the stuff that’s out in the cultural void, but not yet represented by traditional (or even non-traditional) media, we look at the bowels of the internet and what it has spit out over the years.

He used music as his prime example and mimed it out for the crowd.l, hands cupping imaginary headpohones and head bobbing to an imaginary disco beat, he grinned absurdly and continued the service, “Xogjim sonsdog…!”… Though the thought of death and destruction sharing a bed with Christianity is a bit less strange to me than for Buddhism, there are many Christians who avowedly preach non-violence.

Metal Manifesto Part II: The Radio Era

Our Jesper told us about the strict Swedish laws — that prohibited minors from publishing music, thus forcing the band to use a stand-in for the photos (and live shows?… 4 songs from 4 bands started it all: Iron Maiden with The Whicker Man , In Flames with Embody the Invisible , Kamelot with Nights of Arabia , and Sonata Arctica with My Land .

What does it mean to be Metal? (Re)(de)constructing a definition of Metalness. \m/

There are numerous stylistic variations on heavy metal’s core sound, but they’re all tied together by a reliance on loud, distorted guitars (usually playing repeated riffs) and simple, pounding rhythms.”

Metal Manifesto Part I: The Beginning

Each year is divided by that one major change–moving to the next level in school; like the next level of a video game the enemies get craftier and stronger, the bosses more lethal, and your weapons more potent…. I distinctly remember the chill I felt upon realizing just what it was about the songs on the album (by Deep Blue Something) that spoke to me.

Enter the Blessed Ones

Now your average human being watches one channel, then maybe changes to another channel by pressing a button, and then when that program is over they change to a different channel, or wait to see what’s on next, and so on and so forth…. My room is often a reflection of this state (the disorder, not the thriving) and I can see it acting as both a symptom of, and the contributor to my continued disorder, both resulting from and furthering this chaos Distractions, distractible, distracted—in some settings clearly an unproductive behavior, but in others quite the opposite.
